Halloween night.

Due to the hurricane they cancelled our Halloween.  They moved trick-or-treating to Sunday and we decided that we wouldn't participate (it was actually the kids idea!)  School was cancelled the day before because of the nasty rain and wind.  The kids prayed the the weather would stay yucky and they wouldn't have to go to school two days in a row.  Lucky for them, their prayers were answered!  Their school was the only school in the district that still had no power, so they got two days off!  We had a very fun Halloween in spite of the craziness of Hurricane Sandy.  (sidenote:  Graham seriously believes that he has now lived through a hurricane.  He kept looking out the window at the rain and saying, "yep... it's still a hurricane out there."  I tried to explain that we were just getting lots of rain from the hurricane that was hitting the East coast but he just didn't get it.)

We were going to wait until daddy came home to carve our pumpkins but the kids couldn't wait so we went ahead without him.  (Can you tell Peter loves the camera lately?  Our pictures have a lovely fingerprint glow lately.)
Nobody likes to clean out the guts.  I always end up doing them all by myself.
The girls became uninterested after about 5 minutes.  The boys stuck it out until the end.  They even carved their own faces!
We had our traditional dinner... mummies, bones and blood.  Although this year our blood looked more like throw up.  Made for a fun meal.
Peter was unusually happy.  He's kind of bipolar... happy during the day and moany-grumpy-man at night.  I think he ate a lot of candy that day.
During the day we had the kids decorate their bedroom doors and tell us their favorite kind of candy.  Since we couldn't go trick-or-treating outside... we brought it inside!
They each took a turn trick-or-treating to the bedrooms and got lots of their favorite treats!  It was the perfect way to celebrate.  We might make it a tradition.
Lincoln and Jeremy really got into it.  They pretended to be different characters each time they opened the door.  Peter couldn't believe that all he had to do was knock on the door and people gave him candy!
After trick-or-treating we watched our favorite Halloween movie... The Nightmare Before Christmas.  We made it about halfway before Graham said, "My tummy hurts." and be-lined it for the bathroom.  Turns out he had eaten almost ALL of his candy in one sitting.  He learned his lesson.  And he got one more day off from school.
We weren't able to light our pumpkins at all because they were soaked to the bones and the candles kept going out.  Here are the finished products anyway.  Lincolns... (still unsure what he carved).
Jaynie's.  She wanted a fancy flower.  I did my best.
Graham's.  It's a vampire.
Gracie's.  She wanted a happy pumpkin... not a scary one.
And Peter's.  He was supposed to have a mustache... I kind of messed it up.  He's still cute.
We even decorated outside a little this year.  The kids begged and begged for spooky spiderwebs.  I think our tree looked pretty great.
After taking our pumpkin pictures I left the door open so the kids could watch for Daddy.  He always gets such a nice welcome home each day!

So sad that you couldn't go trick-or-treating! Sounds like your kids were so good about it though and that's nice that you came up with an alternative. And your flower pumpkin is my favorite, it looks amazing!
