Graham is an awesome little buddy. He has a personality like no other and we love him for it. Sometimes he does things that we shake our head about. We had an experience like this recently when he decided to stick a popcorn kernel in his ear while at his friends house. Jeremy brought some dental instruments home from work to try to get it out. No luck. We took him to the doctor to get it out. They flushed it with water and used more instruments. No luck. We were referred to an ENT.
We went to the ENT... he took one look at it and said there was no way he would even try because it was too deep. He referred us to surgery. Nice. The day of surgery was fun. He couldn't eat or drink anything for 12 hours before which meant no medicine for his ADHD. He was bouncing off the wall all morning and was super excited to go to the hospital. He was praying that he would get to ride in a wheelchair.
He calmed down once we were brought back to get ready for surgery. I was really impressed with Ahuja Medical Center. They got us back so quickly and everything was run so efficiently. Graham was a little embarrassed that he had to wear a dress.
He had quite the set up... his own tv and a new stuffed animal. He named him Billy. He says it, "Bill-eh". I wish you could hear it. It's so stinkin adorable. I was a little worried that he would stick more stuff in his ears just to come back for the royal treatment. Everyone was so nice to him.
He laughed really hard when the surgeon came in and gave him a little tattoo on his ear to make sure they did the right one. (He has had that skin tag near his ear since birth. It's harmless, but a fun conversation piece.)
He also laughed whenever they would check his blood pressure and the little armband would give him a hug.
He got really nervous when it was almost time to go back. I was so impressed that the surgeon and anesthesiologist both came in and spoke to him about everything that was about to happen. They worked so well with kids.
Time to go! He didn't know that I wasn't able to go with him. Poor guy.
The nurses that took him down were adorable. They asked him if he had ever been in a parade before... and then told him that he would be in his very own parade today! They waved at everyone that they passed on the way to the O.R.
This was amazing. They gave each patient a number and there was a screen to monitor where they were at in their procedure.
They gave me a little card that told what each color meant. I knew exactly when he was in recovery because of this system. I was also impressed that the surgeon came out to the reception area to explain how everything went during the surgery. I was super surprised to hear that they found a kernel in both ears! So grateful they checked both while he was under.
My poor little guy. This is classic Graham. He always curls into the fetal position when he isn't feeling well or is uncomfortable with a situation. The nurses thought it was strange... I told them it was normal.
The first thing he said to me after surgery was, "Don't worry Mommy, I am never ever going to do that again." He was not a fan of the surgery at all. He was able to eat a Popsicle and then we got to go home.
He got his dream of riding in a wheelchair out to the car!
He was very somber for the rest of the day, but was back to normal the next day! Here's hoping he really did learn his lesson. I will never look at popcorn kernels the same again!
